Survival of the Firmest got its title from the authors’ theory that the intricate and redundant biochemical pathways for NO (Nitric Oxide) production by blood vessels evolved in a way to assure reproduction by early man. Without adequate erections, none of us would be here! So, the ability of primitive animals and man to have adequate erections under varied circumstances was essential for them to reproduce and pass on that same trait to their offspring. It can be no coincidence that those factors stimulating NO are all related to the intake of various sources of energy - omega-3 fats from fish; antioxidants, folic acid and carbs from vegetables, fruits and berries; calcium from milk; and L-arginine and L-citrulline from various fish, dairy, meats and fruits. And all of these sources of carbohydrates stimulate insulin, a further factor in NO production. Therefore, no matter how varied early man’s diet was at different times and in different locales, he would have been able to have an erection and reproduce.
Early man was forced to avoid the pitfalls of modern life that reduce NO production by blood vessels. He had to be muscular and fit to escape his enemies (see Exercise and EF ), and food was never plentiful enough for him to become obese (see Excess weight and EF). Unrefined foods, which were the only ones available then, are loaded with healthy antioxidants. He would not have taken in enough sugar or fat to inhibit NO production and his body would have been sensitive to insulin because of exercise and lack of excess body weight. Perhaps everything had to be ideal to counteract the stress of just surviving! (see Stress and EF )
Today our modern conveniences are all costing us very dearly. Many of our gadgets make life so easy that we hardly need to move at all. We walk a few steps to our cars, push one button and the car door unlocks and another one and the garage door opens. We can take the elevator to our offices, e-mail our associates down the hall instead of walking to see them, do our banking online, meet a friend at a fast food place on the way home and settle down for a night of entertainment, all remotely controlled from an easy chair. The latest statistics show that the average American adult watches 142 hours of television per month- that’s an average of almost 5 hours a day! The consequence of modern life is that most American adults are sedentary and two-thirds of U.S adults are overweight and one-third are obese.
It is not just a lack of physical exercise that has caused our bodies to deteriorate. What we eat and do not eat plays a big role. We are surrounded by an overabundance of processed, high calorie foods. These foods have been stripped of their valuable nutrients and fiber -- apple juice rather than a whole apple or processed white bread rather than whole grain bread. This health-harmful processing is done to maximize convenience and increase the shelf-life of food so that we have to get our bodies moving less frequently to buy fresh food. Most individuals are deficient in a number of important nutrients, including omega 3 fatty acids, folic acid, anti-oxidants, and calcium.
Our book will help you to understand how all of these factors are causing poor NO production by your blood vessels. NO is necessary for adequate erections, but it also keeps the lining of your blood vessels healthy. NO opposes blood clotting within the blood vessels, decreases and relaxes the smooth muscle surrounding the blood vessels, and all of these effects help to prevent atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, heart attacks, and strokes.
The role of NO in erectile function is really very simple. Sexual arousal causes the penile artery to relax by releasing NO from the nerve endings. NO is produced from L-arginine (and indirectly from L-citrulline, an important precursor of L-arginine within the cell). Antioxidants, folic acid, omega 3 fats and calcium all help NO production, roughly in that order of importance, and high fat and sugar levels decrease NO production. Insulin also stimulates NO production, but the body becomes insensitive to insulin with obesity or lack of exercise. Certain antioxidants also have a crucial role in preventing NO from being broken down. So, we know how to increase NO production and improve erectile function. Adequate exercise, weight loss, decreased dietary fat and sugar, and increased intake of antioxidants, folic acid, omega-3 fats, and calcium will all work together to maximize your erectile function, while at the same time improving your general health and longevity.
Did you know that in the 1950’s a Coca-cola glass held 6 ounces, and a bag of popcorn from Lowe’s held less than a tenth of the bucket now served at that same theater complex? We’ve even recently seen a 42 ounce portion of cola advertised for 69 cents at a fast-food outlet! We’re living in a health-hostile environment that is just as dangerous to our health and quality of life as early man’s environment was to his very survival. It’s just much harder to identify those dangers than when an animal was trying to make primitive man into his dinner.
How could it possibly be that all of this information is available so people can be healthy yet our population has some of the poorest health statistics of developed nations? If two-thirds of people are overweight, it can’t be that bad, can it? If everyone is eating French fries, doughnuts and Danish pastries, all full of trans fats, it can’t be that bad, can it? If the Atkin’s diet is a best-seller, it can’t be that bad, can it? Well, guess what? The simple fact is that when it comes to nutrition and weight control (and erectile function), if you follow the crowd, you will be in for some very nasty surprises. It can be that bad. Our book, Survival of the Firmest™, will give you the information and the motivation to change the things you’re doing wrong. You can find the time to exercise. You can lose weight. Your tastes will change and you can really enjoy healthy food. You will be much healthier, you will stay out of hospitals and away from doctors (yes, as physicians we would rather see you healthy), and you will have a much more satisfying sex life while enhancing and preserving the relationship most important to you.
You can order Survival of the Firmest™ today from our downloads page or by clicking on the buttons below.
