The information about the causes and treatments for erectile dysfunction (ED) on this website and in Survival of the FIRMEST, is the most current based upon scientifically conducted research. Because every person is a unique individual, it is important for them to formulate a plan to deal with ED based upon a specific set of personal circumstances. For some, weight loss may be the most important issue to focus on. For others, lack of exercise, poor diet or a medical condition like diabetes or high blood pressure may be more important. Individuals are more likely to activate a plan if they have a better understanding of their own specific needs. Sexuality EDucation Network is providing three separate questionnaires that can help individuals guide a personal plan for improving erectile function. Because ED can be a sign of serious heart or blood vessel disease we strongly recommend that significant changes to level of exercise, diet or the use of medication to treat ED be undertaken ONLY with the supervision of a qualified health care professional. The information collected, using these self-assessment tools, should be very useful to professionals who are trained to diagnose and treat ED.
1. Health Assessment Survey.
Check your BMI first. You will need it to complete this health survey. Collecting information about the current state of health is an important start to the formulation of an individual plan to improve ED. The blood tests that are recommended will need to be ordered by and should be interpreted for you by a licensed health care professional. Make sure that they are knowledgeable about the causes and treatment for ED before consulting with them.

2. The International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF).
The IIEF is a 15 item questionnaire that has been validated for men with ED. Each item has a maximum score of 5, making the highest score a total of 75. You should feel very good if you achieve 60 or more, and the most important measure, of course, is whether you and your partner are satisfied. You may want to do a before and after “The Ten Steps” assessment as a way of indicating how much you have improved.

3. Erectile Function Food Survey.
This questionnaire will help you to assess your diet and suggest ways you can improve your nutrition, or if necessary, augment it with supplements. For example, if your intake of natural antioxidants is poor, you may want to take a higher dose of pycnogenol and add low carb chocolate. If you are in the habit of grilling your food often, you may be building up your levels of advanced glycation end products, which may break down nitric oxide in your cells. You may want to adjust the amount of grilling that you are doing.
