Research

Dr. Lou Ignarro

Over the past two decades, research from Dr. Ignarro’s laboratory and others has made the biochemistry and physiology of nitric oxide (NO) one of the most extensively studied and one of the most fundamentally important processes in the human body. Deficiencies of NO have been identified in blood vessels ravaged by atherosclerosis, hypertension, obesity, high fat diets and diabetes. Because exercise increases NO, the sedentary existence of most Americans also contributes greatly to poor vascular health. Although Dr. Ignarro’s work led to the discovery of Viagra, which has benefited countless millions of couples worldwide, the Viagra-like drugs merely treat the symptom (erectile dysfunction) rather than the underlying problem (poor vascular health). We now have the knowledge to correct the underlying problems leading to deficient NO production. Just as he has emphasized in his nationally best-selling book, NO More Heart Disease, the cardiovascular and general health benefits of enhanced NO synthesis by blood vessels will have far-reaching benefits for each and every one of us. As we have pointed out in our book, Survival of the FIRMEST, medicine should aim first to correct the underlying problems of disease. Simply trying to make up for the ravages of an unhealthy lifestyle, by taking statins, using erectile stimulating drugs or having cardiac bypass surgery, will not address the underlying cause of the problem.

“I have no doubt that Survival of the FIRMEST will help millions of couples around the world by improving male sexual performance. It will also contribute significantly to the goal of my book ---- NO More Heart Disease”.
